Introduction

Last night I made dhal, it was nice....

Dhal

Ingredients

  • Lentils (I used red ones, green ones work well too).
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Garam Masala
  • Jeera (cumin)
  • Corriander seeds
  • Cardamom pods
  • Oil for frying
  • Maybe a chillie or two

Method

Bung some lentils in a pan, add some water to cover, bring to the boil and boil for about 10 minutes or so (ensure they don't boil dry), then reduce the heat and simmer for another 10-15 minutes. I aim for the consistency of porridge, you may need to add more water, I think it's better to do this rather than attempt to drain any later on.

Finely chop the onion and ginger, slice the garlic. (and chilli if you are using it)

In a frying pan heat some oil (I used olive), add the jeera and after a 10-15 seconds add the rest of the spices. Reduce the heat slightly and add the chopped onion/garlic and ginger. Fry this until it's nicely browned (you want nice brown garlic, but try not to burn it).

Once the lentils are done stir in the contents of the frying pan. (I also added some fresh peas and chopped boiled spuds too, but only as I had them handy).

Eat.
